The Nickel:
The nickel is worth five cents (5¢). The first five cent piece was minted in 1792. It was not called a nickel, it was called a “half disme” (pronounced “dime”) and it was made of silver. The first nickel actually made of nickel and copper was minted in 1866. The nickel you are most used to seeing has President Thomas Jefferson who was the 3rd president of the United States of America on the front and a house he designed for himself called “Monticello” on the back.
